<image:caption>There’s just something about Ona Beach. Inside Brian Booth State Park on the Central Coast—if you travel through the trees, over the footbridge, and around the bend—a whole other world will emerge before your eyes. It’s the kind of beach you could spend hours getting lost in. It’s also Bedrock Theatre’s newly adopted CoastWatch mile. In the final episode of CoastWatch & Listen, join the whole Bedrock crew as we meet Mile 208, Ona Beach, for the first time; reflect on the lessons and inspirations imparted by the CoastWatchers we’ve met; and begin taking action to answer the question, “How can art and environmentalism coexist?”</image:caption>

<image:caption>CoastWatcher Lyndell Wilken has encountered many personal, professional, and physical challenges throughout her life as an athlete & explorer. Her current obstacle: accessing her adopted mile. It's been a year-and-a-half since her last visit to Mile 147, but her determination to return has never wavered. In this episode, Lyndell takes Emily and Sascha on an immersive remembrance of Mile 147 in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area—a remote stretch of beach currently inaccessible by road.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Adopt a Mile program is a hands-on way of observing coastal ecosystems at work. From documenting wildlife sightings and natural phenomena, to reporting on human activity, CoastWatchers contribute valuable data that help trace cause & effect over time. As guardians for their miles, they recognize that—for better and for worse—we are part of this ecosystem, too. CoastWatcher Crystal Roy guides Emily and Alexandra along the South Coast "hidden gem" of Mile 52 in Port Orford, as we reflect on how interconnected we are with the species in our shared habitat.</image:caption>

      <image:title>CoastWatch & Listen: Episodes - Mile 242 - The Squad - Episode 3</image:title>
<image:caption>The Oregon Coast is a popular tourist destination, drawing millions of visitors every year. Accessible beaches, like those in Lincoln City, are high-traffic, multi-use spaces where human presence takes a toll on the coastal ecosystem. On the flip side, it’s the perfect location for an energetic group of retired teachers on a mission to continue educating people—and continue learning themselves. In this episode, Emily, Sascha, and Joellen of Team Bedrock join CoastWatchers Bobbie Snead, Sally White, Annette DePuy, and Maureen Foelkl for a field trip on Mile 242. As they tell us: “This mile is where the people are.”</image:caption>

But the dream of freely accessible beaches and the realities of human development aren’t always aligned. <image:caption>(Managing Director/Founder | she/her) Emily grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado, where her appreciation for the outdoors began. After spending over a decade in Portland, Oregon, she continues to be amazed by our fortunate proximity to mountains, ocean, forests, and more. A “many hats” type of collaborator, Emily has a wide range of experience as both an artist and administrator with companies including Third Rail Repertory Theatre, CoHo Productions, and Artists Repertory Theatre. She currently works in nonprofit accounting at Susan Matlack Jones & Associates.</image:caption>

An actor, director and teaching artist, Joellen's regional credits include work with Shaking the Tree Theatre, Corrib Theatre, Artists Repertory Theatre, Seattle Shakespeare Company, Renegade Opera and others. Joellen earned her Masters of Fine Arts in Acting from the University of Washington, and currently works as Development Manager for North Pole Studio, and serves as a member of The Verdancy Project Advisory Board.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Team - BECCA WIRTA</image:title>
<image:caption>(Communications Director | she/her) Born and raised on the Puget Sound in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, Becca is a Portland-based performer and creator who is inspired by the seasons’ offerings: from autumn mushroom foraging and winter fireside dinner parties, to spring bloom-fueled hikes and summer evening berry picking. Along with being a member of Bedrock Theatre, she is a founding member of Basement Stair Collective, an experimental theatre company illuminating and challenging the cycles in which we are trapped through immersive, collaborative, and design-forward performance. She is a graduate of Willamette University with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Theatre Performance as well as Rhetoric and Media Studies, and is also a graduate of the Institute of Contemporary Performance with Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble. Outside of theatre, she works in communications, relishes discussing a juicy read with book club, loves cooking with friends, and is most relaxed watching a film in her creaky 1890s home snuggled up with her husband and two cats near a crackling fire.</image:caption>

<image:caption>(Company Manager | she/they) Alexandra is a lifelong Oregonian who continues to be enchanted by the incredible ecological diversity of their home state. She is connected to Bedrock via participating in the Third Rail Mentorship Program with Emily, Sean, and Joellen; and belonging to a bookclub with Becca since 2018. Their contributions to Bedrock include: the care & keeping of multiple moving parts & people, a knack for finagling a schedule, and creative content skills for production materials like the CoastWatch & Listen and SSMT album covers. <image:caption>(Founder | he/him) Sean is from Lincoln, Nebraska, and moved back home in 2025. He received his B.A. in Theatre Directing/Management from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. After graduation, he came to Portland, Oregon for the mentorship program with Third Rail Repertory Theatre and immediately fell in love with the Pacific Northwest. Sean loves creating new works with an ensemble of artists. Sean tells his stories through music, photography/video, food and beverage. He will miss being on the trail with Bedrock, but looks forward to finding creative ways to contribute and support Bedrock productions from afar.</image:caption>

<image:caption>School’s out for the summer and mom says I don’t have to be home until dark. Want to go explore? Meet me at our spot – you know, the one we went to all those times that one year? when the wildflowers were going crazy? Maybe we could jam a little? I’ll bring my guitar. Just in case. Isn’t it a full moon, too? We HAVE to stay till sunset. I hope it’s a clear night. I guess the sky will be there either way.</image:caption>

      <image:title>CoastWatch & Listen - Tune in to PRP.FM</image:title>
<image:caption>Bedrock Theatre was recently featured on our local nonprofit radio station Portland Radio Project's “Community Voices” program. Lead Producer Emily Eisele sat down with host Veronica Bisesti to talk about Bedrock's origins, the making of CoastWatch & Listen, and why the heck an outdoor theatre company is producing a podcast anyways. And, episodes of CoastWatch & Listen are coming to a radio near you! Starting Saturday October 4th at 8am, tune into 99.1FM or PRP.FM every other Saturday to (re)listen to these episodes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For more than 50 years, Oregon Shores has served as the state’s leading voice when it comes to protecting the beaches, landscapes, and ecosystems that make Oregon’s coast so spectacular and loved. Their mission is to educate and empower people to protect our coastal ecosystems and communities. Since 1993, volunteers have adopted mile-long segments of the Oregon coast through the CoastWatch program to document seasonal natural and human-caused changes, wildlife, and phenomena. > Learn more about Oregon Shores.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bedrock is a small, nonprofit creative ensemble rooted in Portland, Oregon. We create immersive, site-specific works for natural landscapes that connect audiences to their environment and to each other. Outdoor exploration is an anchor in our creative process. With CoastWatch & Listen, we took the next step in deepening the impact of our creative practice: connecting with organizations fighting on the frontlines for environmental protections and learning how to incorporate stewardship into our work. > Take a look at our past productions.</image:caption>
