WHAT IS OREGON SHORES CONSERVATION COALITION?
For more than 50 years, Oregon Shores has served as the state's leading voice when it comes to protecting the beaches, headlands, landscapes, and ecosystems that make Oregon's Coast so loved.
What is the CoastWatch Program?
Founded in 1993, CoastWatch is Oregon Shores' network of dedicated community science volunteers who monitor Oregon’s shoreline. Each CoastWatch volunteer adopts a mile-long segment of Oregon’s coast; volunteers visit their coastal mile four times a year, or once each season, reporting on natural events and human-induced changes. This year, over 30 years of CoastWatch data is being compiled into an interactive digital map analyzing trends and changes over time. You can learn more about the CoastWatch program here.
How is Bedrock Collaborating?
Over spring & summer 2025, Bedrock is producing CoastWatch & Listen, an interactive audio mapping project. Company member Emily Eisele, guest artist Sascha Blocker, and other members of the Bedrock team are traveling to the coast to record interviews with CoastWatchers onsite at their adopted miles of coastline. We'll be uncovering the human stories that coexist alongside the data they’ve collected over the years--what inspired them to volunteer, what they have learned from observing the landscape over time, what their worries & hopes are for the future of the coast. Interview highlights will be linked to their corresponding mile markers on the digital map produced by Oregon Shores, deepening the impact of the quantitative data by providing personal narratives in context. Bedrock will also release long-form audio episodes, in which listeners will experience these narratives interwoven with original, site-specific compositions inspired by our exploration of the miles. Both the map and the audio series are free resources slated for release to the general public in summer 2025.
